Online Adult Literacy Certification Program
Virginia Commonwealth University and the Virginia Association for Adult and Continuing Education are pleased to announce the beginning of a new cycle of the Online Adult Literacy Certification Program. The program is offered as a series of five on-line courses leading to a Tier Three Certificate in the Virginia Adult Educator Certification Program . As well, the program leads to an endorsement in adult education through the Virginia State Department of Education for those participants who have a current Virginia teaching license. (A teaching license is not required for the online program—see below.) The online program targets educators working (or aspiring to work) in all adult literacy settings, including public school systems, community colleges, community based literacy and ESL centers, correctional centers, etc.
The new cycle begins this fall, 2011. As in the past, we offer one course per semester, three per year (including summer), for a total of five consecutive semesters. To be eligible, participants must possess a bachelor’s degree (not necessarily in a field of education); a teaching license is NOT required. See the VCU webpage for course descriptions: http://www.soe.vcu.edu/departments/tl/online_adult_lit.htm
The first course of the sequence is READ 602, Teaching Literacy and Numeracy to Adults. The class runs from August 25 - December 15, 2011 and the instructor is Dr. William Muth. Tuition is $615.
If you are interested, please contact Buffy Allgood, Treasurer of VAACE, who is serving as registrar for the program. Buffy’s contact information is below. The deadline for registering is August 1, 2011.

Want to go to prison?
The Department of Correctional Education (DCE) plans to expand their volunteer base to bring in more volunteer teachers and tutors, aides in the classroom. We hope to expand our teaching capacity with these volunteers in order to better prepare offenders for future education and employment when they re-enter society. DCE acts as the school system within both the juvenile and adult correctional institutions.
A high number of people who leave prison will return to prison instead of becoming able, productive members of their communities. One of the things we can do to enhance their chances of success in the community is to encourage their educational efforts while they are still in prison.
YOU can be a volunteer tutor/teacher. YOU can affect a student and become a role model in his or her life. YOU can teach and encourage a student so they are prepared when they re-enter society and their communities. YOU can be a part of helping people to address the ongoing challenges they face in their life as they prepare to return home.
As a former teacher, YOU exist as one of the most influential and effective possible resources for these students! You are exactly the kind of person needed for this opportunity.
Our main and most pressing needs:
- volunteers with keen math or writing skills
- volunteers with knowledge of some type of vocational training
Times, locations, and schedules will be worked out on an individual level.
A Background Check will be required.
